Parliament’s Monsoon Session to Begin July 20 With Constitutional Bills on Agenda

The four-week session will feature 19 sittings and take up bills that have drawn sharp debate between the treasury and opposition benches.

Parliament’s Monsoon Session will run from July 20 to August 13, President Droupadi Murmu has approved on the government’s recommendation, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced. The four-week session will feature 19 sittings for what Rijiju called “meaningful debate, discussion and decisions on issues of national importance.”

Among the bills expected to be tabled are the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which would raise Lok Sabha strength to operationalise 33 percent women’s reservation, and a delimitation bill that previously failed to secure the two-thirds majority required for passage. The government is also expected to push the One Nation, One Election Bill and a Foreign Contribution Regulation Amendment Bill, the latter of which has drawn opposition from several states, including Kerala, over concerns it could affect voluntary organisations in the social, health, and education sectors.
